Alcides Velasquez (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies. His research is focused on two core areas. The first is understanding the social and political uses of social media. The second is understanding how access and use of new communication technologies can become either a new source of inequality, or a helpful tool to reduce the existing disparities in contemporary societies. In his research, he incorporates concepts and theories from communication, political science, information studies, and social psychology.  His research can be found in journals like New Media & Society, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, and Social Media and Society. Dr. Velasquez teaches courses in political communication, communication and technology, content analysis and media representations of minorities.
