Edwards Campus launches 4 certificate programs

Wednesday, August 05, 2015

OVERLAND PARK – The University of Kansas Edwards Campus will launch four certificate programs this fall to complement the current programs in business, global and international studies, and environmental assessment. The Edwards Campus is offering these programs to address businesses’ trending interests in certificates and the benefits they offer.

“Investing in key employees by supporting their participation in a career-specific certificate program pays for itself through increased capability and loyalty,” said Robert Campbell, partner at Propio. “I have found that these employees tend to be much more engaged and productive in the workplace."

Businesses and employees alike recognize that certificates offer a higher level of expertise in a cost-effective manner – often a level of expertise specifically tailored for professional positions.

"Earning my MPA and a certificate in environmental assessment offers great career opportunities,” said Ben Washburn, KU Edwards student. ”My certificate courses will give me practical knowledge that I expect to use in my career.”

Certificates save time and money for all parties involved, making it easier for businesses and employees to obtain skill sets needed to advance. KU Edwards' new programs have flexible schedules, catering to working professionals’ needs.

“We are continually exploring ways we can help businesses grow and the Greater Kansas City community develop,” said David Cook, vice chancellor of the Edwards Campus. “Certificates are becoming valuable credentials to employers, and we are aiming to cater to their needs.”

The new certificate programs are accounting, professional workplace communication, city and county management, and performance management.

The accounting certificate is applicable for those in or seeking an accounting role, providing a foundation of financial, tax and managerial accounting.

The professional workplace communication certificate comes as a response to the demand of communication, interpersonal and team skills missing in midlevel management. This certificate offers professionals an opportunity to improve soft skills.

The city and county management and performance management certificates act as emphases for students in roles in government and public service.
