Biography

Dr. Hummert rejoined the department this academic year after serving as Vice Provost for Faculty Development from 2006-2017. She studies the social cognitive processes linking age stereotypes and communication. Her research has been supported with funding from the National Institute on Aging/National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hummert’s research examines the structure of age stereotypes held by adults across the lifespan and how age stereotypes influence intergenerational communication. Her research has also considered the extent to which stereotypes and age identity operate outside conscious awareness (i.e., implicitly) to affect perceptions and behavior.  Recent work includes a consideration of the ways in which age stereotypes and related communication practices emerge in and affect family relationships. Examples include the transfer of family communication patterns from generation to generation and family decision-making about age-related life style changes. Dr. Hummert has published extensively in communication, psychology, and gerontology journals, and is the co-editor of two books: Interpersonal Communication in Older Adulthood: Interdisciplinary Research (1994), and Aging, Communication, and Health: Linking Research and Practice for Successful Aging (2001). She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a Giles-Nussbaum Distinguished Scholar in Communication and Aging. Honors received at the University of Kansas include being named a W.T. Kemper Foundation Teaching Fellow, a Byron A. Alexander Outstanding Graduate Mentor, and a member of the Kansas Women’s Hall of Fame.
