Communication Studies Department Awarded Inaugural Chancellor's Doctoral Fellowship!
February 20, 2014
The Communication Studies department at the University of Kansas has been awarded one of 10 inaugural Chancellor’s Doctoral Fellowships. The fellowship recognizes the excellence of the Communication Studies doctoral program and the department’s commitment to graduate education. Among the more than 60 departments, programs, and schools at KU, only 10 received a Chancellor’s fellowship. Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Danny Anderson noted that the receipt of the fellowship was “a great honor for your doctoral program.”
This is the second major University fellowship award received by the department this year. The department also was awarded a fellowship from KU Graduate Studies. Department Chair Tom Beisecker noted that receiving two major fellowships in one academic year is strong evidence of the recognized quality of the graduate program.
The Chancellor’s Fellowship guarantees up to five years of graduate support at $25,000 per year to an outstanding newly-entering graduate student. The student receiving the fellowship will receive research support as a Graduate Research Assistant in the first and fifth years of the fellowship and will serve as a graduate teaching assistant in the middle three years of the fellowship term.
These two fellowships recognize the efforts of the department in mentoring and nurturing graduate students. Since 2000, of 111 Ph.D. graduates, 70 have been placed in tenure-track positions. The majority of the remaining graduates have obtained positions in business, legal consulting, or administrative positions in higher education. Beisecker noted that this placement rate is a major accomplishment, especially given the difficult economic conditions since 2000.
The fellowships also recognize the extraordinary productivity of Communication Studies faculty in the past decade, a period in which they have produced a half-dozen academic books, dozens of peer-reviewed articles in top journals and have received multiple prestigious awards, including several national awards for research.
